Dunc Electric – Electrified Bagpipe Chanter Stock
The Dunc Electric Electrified Chanter Stock lets you plug your real Highland pipes straight into an amp or effects rig – no electronic chanter required.
Simply replace your existing chanter stock with the Dunc Electric stock, insert your normal pipe chanter and reed, and connect a standard ¼" instrument cable. A built-in pickup captures the chanter sound directly in the stock and sends a clean, consistent signal to amps, pedals or recording gear.
You keep the feel and response of traditional pipes, but gain full control over volume and tone: from clean amplification for stage and studio, to wild soundscapes using modern effects. Ideal for pipers playing with bands, in amplified folk/rock/metal settings, or anyone who wants their Highland pipes to behave like an electric instrument.
Dunc Electric Electrified Chanter Stock – Technical Details
The Dunc Electric Electrified Chanter Stock is a replacement Highland bagpipe chanter stock with an integrated, patented piezoelectric pickup system. The pickup is built into the stock itself and is voiced specifically for the Highland pipe chanter to provide an isolated, even-response signal across all notes.
The Highland version uses a custom Acetyl stock manufactured by McCallum Bagpipes, beaded and combed to visually match traditional Highland pipes. The stock ties into the bag in the same way as a standard chanter stock. Your existing pipe chanter and reed are used without modification – the stock is the only required hardware change.
A compact external enclosure, made from black powder-coated aluminium, is suspended from the stock and houses the electronics. This enclosure provides:
- 1 × ¼" TS output jack (instrument level), suitable for guitar/bass amps, pedalboards, multi-effects and audio interfaces.
- 1 × volume control to adjust output level before hitting downstream gear.
- A circuit optimised to reduce finger noise and unwanted frequencies while preserving the character of the chanter.
The pickup captures only the chanter; drones remain acoustic and can be miked or treated separately, giving sound engineers precise control over the chanter/drone balance in live and studio contexts. Compared to conventional microphone setups, this provides:
- Consistent level on all notes regardless of player movement.
- Reduced bleed from other instruments and stage noise.
- Simple integration with pedal-based rigs and modern backline.
Typical use cases include:
- Live performance in rock, folk, metal and fusion bands requiring reliable amplification.
- Studio recording where a direct, isolated chanter track is needed for processing and reamping.
- Creative/electronic setups where the chanter signal is routed through delay, reverb, distortion, modulation, looping and other effects.
In short, the Dunc Electric Electrified Chanter Stock keeps the instrument itself fully traditional – real bag, real chanter, real reed – while turning the chanter into a modern, pedal-friendly, stage-ready electric source.
